Should you go back to your old company?

Thinking about going back to your old company? It might seem like a good path, you know the job, the people and how things work. But it’s a decision that deserves real thought, what’s different now and does this move still make sense for you? This week at Career Recruiters, we’re sharing our insights on the questions you need to ask before you make this decision.

Why did you leave?

Start with the most important question: Why did you leave? Was it about pay, a difficult manager, no room for growth, a better offer elsewhere or just time for a change?

Sometimes, the reasons for leaving were minor but other times, they’re significant. If those issues haven’t been resolved, going back could mean walking into the same challenges and frustrations. Time away doesn’t guarantee things are better.

What’s different now?

You might feel like you have a clearer picture this time. You’ve worked there before, after all. But that doesn’t mean you can skip doing your due diligence. Teams evolve. Managers leave. Cultures shift. Take the time to find out if it still fits where you are in your career.

Are you coming back for the right reasons?

Ask yourself what’s really driving the decision. Is it comfort? Convenience? A tough job market? Or is it a genuine opportunity to grow in ways you couldn’t before?

Sometimes we’re tempted to go back not because it’s the best move—but because it feels easier than pushing forward. That’s why going back, while tempting, can also be a difficult career decision with long-term impact.

Would this help you grow in your career?

When people leave a job, it’s often for growth. So if you’re going back, the question becomes: Is there room to grow this time? Are you coming back to a better role, a stronger offer or new responsibilities? Here are some things to think about:

Get specific about the role and your career goals. Can your old company support the career goals you have now?

Check your motivation. Are you returning to move forward or just trying to undo a decision that didn’t work out?

Talk it out. A mentor or a trusted colleague who can offer perspective and ask the hard questions you might be avoiding.

How will this move be seen by others and by you?

Returning to a former company isn’t unusual these days but it’s worth thinking beyond the job offer—how will your return be seen by your old team and how will you see yourself? Are the same dynamics still in place?

This kind of move should be intentional. Your reasons, your readiness and how it fits into your long-term goals all matter. Going back isn’t the issue. It’s whether it’s the right step toward where you truly want to go.
